You can start the process by contacting me for a free 20-minute consultation. If you are looking to work with me as an editor, I will read a short sample of your work before the consultation, so that we can discuss the specific type of editing or consulting you would benefit from. During the consultation we will discuss your editing needs and timeline. Questions in this consultation will include:
What is the length and scope of your project?
What is your timeline for completion?
What stage are you at in the writing process?
Have you already received feedback on the manuscript, and if so, does it need to be incorporated into the next draft?
What outlet do you hope to publish in?
What is your budget?
What is your turnaround?
Turnaround varies based on the type of project and how many other clients I am currently working with. At the time that we confirm services, I will provide you with two dates: the date I will begin your work, and the date I will complete your work. Keep in mind that I may not be able to immediately start on your project, as I am working with other clients. If you are in need of a speedy turnaround, I may be able to fit you in but I charge a rush fee of 50%.
What are your rates?
My rates vary based on the service. Once you contact me for services, I will send you a list of my rates. For copyediting, I charge a per page rate. For developmental consulting (for instance, when I help you to conceive of a new project or transform a dissertation into a book), I will quote you a price based on an hourly rate.
What can I expect from your editing services?
When you send me a document to be edited, the process is as follows. I will work in a Word document, and use Track Changes as well as the Comment function to add corrections, revisions, and suggestions for how to improve the manuscript. In addition to these in-text changes, I will also write a memo highlighting the most substantive revisions I made, as well as any recurring issues I noticed. For basic copyediting, I will return to you a version with all of the marked changes, as well as a “clean” version where I have accepted all of the changes that I made.
